Methods

• In-clinic whitening: a stronger bleaching gel is applied by the dentist, often with a light. Results in one visit.
• Home whitening: the clinic makes custom trays and gives you a milder gel to use for one to two weeks. Slower, often with a more even result.
• Many clinics combine both.

What it costs in Hanoi

What whitening can and cannot do

• It works best on yellowish discolouration from food, coffee, tea and age.
• Grey discolouration (for example from some antibiotics) or a single dark tooth after a root canal responds less well.
• Crowns, veneers and fillings don't change colour. If you plan new crowns or veneers, whiten first.
• Results fade over months to years, faster with coffee, tea, red wine and smoking.

Side effects and who should wait

Sensitivity to cold and mild gum irritation are common and usually pass within days. Untreated decay, gum disease or exposed roots should be treated first. Whitening is generally not done during pregnancy or for children. Be careful with whitening products sold online or in shops without supervision by a dentist.
