Root canal treatment in Hanoi
Last updated 6 November 2026 · By the Dentist in Hanoi editorial team · General information, not medical advice
In short: a root canal treatment removes infected or inflamed tissue from inside a tooth so the tooth can be kept. In Hanoi it usually takes one to three visits, and molars take longer and cost more than front teeth. A back tooth often needs a crown afterwards, which is a separate cost.
When a root canal is needed
Inside each tooth is soft tissue with nerves and blood vessels (the pulp). Deep decay, a crack or an injury can make it inflamed or infected. Typical signs are a strong or throbbing toothache, pain that lingers after hot or cold, pain when biting, or swelling of the gum. Only a dentist can tell, usually with an X-ray, whether a root canal is the right treatment.
What happens
- X-ray and local anaesthetic.
- The dentist opens the tooth, removes the pulp and cleans and shapes the root canals.
- The canals are filled and sealed. Between visits there may be a temporary filling with medication.
- The tooth is restored with a filling or, often for back teeth, a crown.
Front teeth have one canal, molars three or four, which is why molars take longer. Some clinics use a dental microscope or rotary instruments; you can ask about this.

The crown or final filling is usually priced separately. See Dental crowns in Hanoi.
If you are only in Hanoi for a short time
If you can't stay for the full treatment, ask the dentist about relieving the pain now (opening and cleaning the tooth, placing medication and a temporary filling) and finishing the treatment at home. Ask for your X-rays and a short written note of what was done.
Facial swelling that spreads, fever, or difficulty swallowing or breathing can mean a serious infection. Go to a hospital emergency department or call 115. See Emergency dentist in Hanoi.

Frequently asked questions
Does a root canal hurt?
The treatment is done under local anaesthetic and usually feels similar to getting a filling. Some tenderness for a few days afterwards is common.
Do I need a crown after a root canal?
Often, for back teeth, because a treated tooth can become brittle and crack. Front teeth can often be restored with a filling. Your dentist decides based on how much tooth is left.
